“Hey, Chief!” Amanda Morgan waved Conrad Harris forward into her office. “Are you looking for the mayor? She will be right back.”

“I was. I had to go to court this morning, so I haven’t been in the office yet.”

“Morning, Chief.” Cora Mae patted Conrad on the back before crossing the room to sit. “I gave my keys to Rodney, and he’s going to run out to the convention center later,” Cora said to Amanda and she nodded.

Conrad sat in a chair by the door. “I’ll be out that way later today. Is there something I could pick up for you?”

“We have a bunch of stanchions in storage out there and Rodney is going to take the truck to pick them up. I thought they would help at the wedding.”

“My small affair keeps growing.” Amanda took a deep breath. “We may need help keeping people in line.”

Conrad chuckled. “I’m happy to help however I can.”

“Thank you,” Amanda said with her hand over her heart. “There is one thing…”

“What can we do?” Cora Mae leaned forward.

“Maybe it’s silly, but could you both sit on Bryan’s side Saturday?” Amanda looked at Conrad and then Cora. “Bryan doesn’t have any family and I’m afraid how it might look.”

“Of course, dear! I understand perfectly. I know Mavis is going to sit for Bryan’s mother. She already mentioned it to me. We’ll be right behind her! I believe Grace is coming and we will invite her to join us, too.”

“We’ll make sure it balances out.” Conrad crossed his ankle over his knee. “Don’t you worry about a thing.”

“One more thing, Chief.” Amanda scrunched her shoulders up apologetically. “I might have volunteered you as a possible groomsman. Sonjay is just so unreliable and I told Bryan he needed a Plan B in case Sonjay couldn’t make it.”

Conrad looked confused for a moment and then his eyes widened. “Of course! That won’t be a problem at all. I can step in at the last minute if needed.”

“Thank you.” Amanda put her palms together. “Thank you both for everything.”

Cora gave a dismissive wave. “We’ll always be there for you. You know that.”

Conrad nodded.

“My wedding photos might look like I married a convict, but at least Bryan won’t be there alone.” Amanda’s chuckle turned the room into laughter.

“Or a shotgun wedding!” Cora Mae slapped her leg.

“I promise to wear a suit, no uniform.” Conrad smiled.

Amanda picked up her phone when she heard a notification of a text and glanced down. “It’s my mom.”

“Is everything okay?”

“She said Charlotte isn’t feeling well. She’s resting at the house and they are going to check with her doctor.”

Cora Mae pointed at Amanda. “You may need a Plan B yourself!”
