âHey, Chief!â Amanda Morgan waved Conrad Harris forward into her office. âAre you looking for the mayor? She will be right back.â
âI was. I had to go to court this morning, so I havenât been in the office yet.â
âMorning, Chief.â Cora Mae patted Conrad on the back before crossing the room to sit. âI gave my keys to Rodney, and heâs going to run out to the convention center later,â Cora said to Amanda and she nodded.
Conrad sat in a chair by the door. âIâll be out that way later today. Is there something I could pick up for you?â
âWe have a bunch of stanchions in storage out there and Rodney is going to take the truck to pick them up. I thought they would help at the wedding.â
âMy small affair keeps growing.â Amanda took a deep breath. âWe may need help keeping people in line.â
Conrad chuckled. âIâm happy to help however I can.â
âThank you,â Amanda said with her hand over her heart. âThere is one thingâ¦â
âWhat can we do?â Cora Mae leaned forward.
âMaybe itâs silly, but could you both sit on Bryanâs side Saturday?â Amanda looked at Conrad and then Cora. âBryan doesnât have any family and Iâm afraid how it might look.â
âOf course, dear! I understand perfectly. I know Mavis is going to sit for Bryanâs mother. She already mentioned it to me. Weâll be right behind her! I believe Grace is coming and we will invite her to join us, too.â
âWeâll make sure it balances out.â Conrad crossed his ankle over his knee. âDonât you worry about a thing.â
âOne more thing, Chief.â Amanda scrunched her shoulders up apologetically. âI might have volunteered you as a possible groomsman. Sonjay is just so unreliable and I told Bryan he needed a Plan B in case Sonjay couldnât make it.â
Conrad looked confused for a moment and then his eyes widened. âOf course! That wonât be a problem at all. I can step in at the last minute if needed.â
âThank you.â Amanda put her palms together. âThank you both for everything.â
Cora gave a dismissive wave. âWeâll always be there for you. You know that.â
Conrad nodded.
âMy wedding photos might look like I married a convict, but at least Bryan wonât be there alone.â Amandaâs chuckle turned the room into laughter.
âOr a shotgun wedding!â Cora Mae slapped her leg.
âI promise to wear a suit, no uniform.â Conrad smiled.
Amanda picked up her phone when she heard a notification of a text and glanced down. âItâs my mom.â
âIs everything okay?â
âShe said Charlotte isnât feeling well. Sheâs resting at the house and they are going to check with her doctor.â
Cora Mae pointed at Amanda. âYou may need a Plan B yourself!â
